Joseph Smith

Prophet of God (1805-1844)

Welcome to JosephSmith.dk. It is a common perception today that prophets of God only existed in Old Testament times, and that God no longer speaks to the earth through prophets like Moses, Isaiah and Jeremiah. But that's not the case! The Bible says that the the Lord is "the same yesterday, and today, and for ever." ( Hebrew 13:8 ). The way he works amongst man on earth has never changed. When God has an important message for the inhabitants of the world he raises a prophet and commands that prophet to bear witness of the message he has received. This pattern has been followed since the first man Adam and down to our time. "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." ( Amos 3:7 ) In modern times He has sent a message to the world through a prophet and through him has restored important parts of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which had been lost to the world. This happened in 1820 when the Father and the Son appeared to Joseph Smith as "two Personages, whose brightness and glory defied all description." Joseph Smith spoke face to face with the Lord Jesus Christ and was told that the time had come for the "restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began" ( Acts. 3:19-21 ).

The Church of Jesus Christ restored as it were originally

Joseph Smith was told that The Church of Jesus Christ was no longer on earth due to an apostasy from the Church which the Lord had organized in the meridian of time. At this magnificent event it was made known to Joseph that the Church of Jesus Christ was to be restored on earth again in its original form. He was also told that important parts of the Gospel of Jesus Christ had been lost as a consequence of apostasy. These important parts of the Gospel were now to be restored. Joseph Smith was, as an instrument in the hands of the Lord, the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Members of the Church acknowledges his revelations as holy scripture and believes that the true Gospel of Jesus Christ is restored to the earth in modern times through the Prophet Joseph Smith.

The Father and the Son appeared to Joseph Smith

At the time when Joseph Smith grew up there was a major religious awakening in the area where he lived. Joseph wanted to join a church but couldn't find out which of them was the right one. After reading a promise from God in the Bible on getting wisdom ( James 1:5 ), Joseph asked God in prayer which church he should join. This happened in the spring 1820. As answer to his prayer God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him. They told him not to join any of the churches as they, according to the Lord, were all wrong. Three years later an angel of the Lord, Moroni, appeared to Joseph and told him about a holy record of a people who lived on the american continent in ancient times. In 1827 Joseph received this old record and translated it to modern language by the gift and power of God. It contains the fullness of The Gospel of Jesus Christ as it had been preached to ancient inhabitants in America.

Joseph Smith died as a Martyr of God

As many of the ancient prophets and apostles, Joseph Smith died as a Martyr of God. The Saints in Missouri experienced intense persecution, Joseph was imprisoned on false charges and the Saints were forced to leave the state. In Nauvoo, Illinois, Joseph served as mayor and as leader of the public militia. He introduced the temple ordinances as they are performed today in the House of the Lord. Tensions from non-mormon neighbours increased and finally culminated in the martyrdom of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum Smith in Carthage prison June the 27th, 1844. As Joseph Smith was an instrument in the hand of the Lord he could say, as the Lord himself, (and as any true prophet of God):

"My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself." ( John 7:16-17 )

A promise from God to those who read these things

The Book of Mormon contains a promise from God. Any person who will ask God in humble and sincere prayer if these things are true is promised confirmation from the Holy Spirit of the truth of the things they read. Fulfillment of this promise is the reason why millions of people around the world have joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, as they acknowledged the hand of God behind these things:

"Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts. And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." (Moroni 10:3-5)
